After the age of 25 years – for most people – hormones begin failing at different rates. For example, failure of the adrenals, thyroid, pancreas, ovary, parathyroid, testicles, and the pituitary can occur. And, while there are many different ways in which hormones will affect your health, the most common complaints Dr. Edwin Lee hears in his office are related to fatigue or tiredness. Dr. Lee says, “Although there are many patients I have helped, the one that sticks out in my mind is a world-class triathlete who was complaining that she was too tired to run, and could not run fast anymore. After balancing her hormonal deficiency, and vitamin D deficiency, she is now performing better than ever.”
Because Dr. Lee is board certified in Endocrinology – and specially trained in regenerative and functional medicine – he is well aware of the controversies in optimizing the thyroid, treating adrenal fatigue, using bioidentical hormones, using testosterone with men who have prostate cancer, doing intravenous nutrition, prescribing recombinant growth hormone in adults, using DHEA, and prescribing progesterone. In fact, Dr. Lee wrote his first book, Feel Good Look Younger: Reversing Tiredness Through Hormonal Balance, to conclusively review the medical evidence and to explain the controversial issues on each of those topics.
Hormonal imbalance can present with multiple complaints like: hot flashes, irritability, foggy thinking, weight gain, weight loss, insomnia, gut disturbances and fatigue – just to name a few! Dr. Lee explains, “I often see patients who may have normal blood work; however, with more advanced testing I can detect a hormonal imbalance. Another patient I remember is one who believed that she had a hormonal imbalance, but after seeing five different doctors she was told it was all in her head. After I told she had adrenal fatigue and that her adrenals were failing, she cried and was so relieved that it was not all in her head. She is now feeling great and enjoying life.”
In addition, the decline of hormones is the main cause of aging. However, by optimizing your hormones with bioidentical hormones, Dr. Lee can slow down your aging process and help keep your DNA – the most important structure in your body – healthy. Although low levels of hormones will accelerate the aging process, there is one hormone that should not be elevated. Excessive insulin levels will – to name a few examples – accelerate the aging process, accumulate body fat and increase the risk of dementia or brain loss.
Dr. Lee strongly believes that the best way to treat hormonal imbalance is by natural hormones. Natural hormones are the exact and identical hormones that are made in your body. There are too many side effects from synthetic hormones – such as causing cancer. The use of bioidentical hormones with estradiol, estriol, progesterone and or testosterone in women is essential, whereas the use of testosterone in men is crucial to prevent early mortality. The use of other bioidentical hormones is also used in Dr. Lee’s treatment plans. While receiving bioidentical hormones, you will need to be monitored by blood, urine or saliva testing.
As always, Dr. Lee’s goal is to optimize your hormones for achieving wellness and happiness. Or, as Dr. Lee likes to say, “My goal is to help you Feel Good Look Younger!”
